Okay, my fingers are itching, so here we go
Proportions/Shapes/Perspective
The proportions are quite good, though his body seems average sized, and his legs are a bit too small, too fat, or maybe the combination
The perspective is quite good too, his whole body is directed in the same way
Outlines
You did apply some double outlines, see HIS right, OUR left, leg. And you also need to learn some more on curvature and smoothness
Shading
This is the place where it went wrong. First of all, you used too many colours, I think, on his legs. Three really would be enough. This also results, in your case, into pillow shading. I don't care if you followed a tut or not, but if they said anything about pillow shading, and they said to avoid it, they're wrong! Don't avoid it, just NEVER use it. In case you didn't read my previous sentence, NEVER apply pillow shading. It's bad, really. On other parts you didn't use enough shading, or none at all!, and the contrast is also bad on some parts
Try to imagine how it would look like in an anime or IRL, and try to apply the shading that way, cuz now it's really dull shading

All together, it isn't too bad, it's your first custom after all, but you really could use some more practise. Don't let this demotivate you, this is pretty good after all!! biggrin

This is completely custom? Really? It's actually pretty good then! ^-^ Of course there are several flaws; but after you continue spriting, your skills will advance and advance and even further, advance. I'm really glad you've posted these! You seem to have a fairly good aspect on the outlines; however when you get to the lower body you seemed to have given up a tad. Other than that, I won't repeat what Haku said- it is better criticism than I can offer right now.

-One thing I just noticed ascwell as the other details Haku pointed out; the head band forhead protector's shading needs work. Try referencing the premade 'snd' sprites to see how they made the metal plate on his headband.
(Other than that, I think Haku summed it up well!)

Great sprite, I hope you continue spriting and will begin commenting on others' sprites. I really enjoyed this sprite! ^-^

I think Haku covered everything you need to improve on. I do have to say though, if this is your first sprite, and its custom, you have a lot more potential than I ever did when I was starting. Hm... Maybe I should dig up that very first Eragon sprite sheet I did so all you guys can get a good laugh at me happy
