Sorry, no. Custom means completely custom. Feel free to use another sprite or a base sprite as a reference, but you can't just edit it.
As for progress, haven't done much yet. I'm planning to do most of it over Christmas Break. Well, when I'm not playin Skyrim 
Keep in mind, you don't have to just make a basic stance. You can make it some kind of attacking pose, something dynamic if you want.
