| For those of you who don't know, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are bills currently circulating through the House of Representatives and the Senate, respectively. If made into law, these acts would severely limit access to the Internet for Americans, as it gives the government permission to block or take down any websites that: 1. Host copyrighted material 2. Allow searches of copyrighted material 3. Link to copyrighted material At first glance, this doesn't seem so bad. But, when you consider the implications of the laws, they could affect the entire Internet in negative ways. Through these acts, sites such as Youtube and Google could be blocked to all Americans. More to the point regarding this site, I've also thought about how acts such as these could have an impact on the spriting community. If you think about it, sites like SpriteDatabase and TheSpriters-Resource could be blocked. After all, the games the sprites hosted there are taken from are all copyrighted. Also, rippers wouldn't be able to rip the sprites from games because in all likelihood all sites hosting the roms they rip from would also be blocked.
Now, as I understand, SOPA has been neutralized for the time being, but PIPA is still a threat. I and the rest of my Computer Repair class sent emails to our state's senator regarding this act.
I just thought I'd help raise awareness, since over the past few weeks virtually nothing has been said about these acts on TV or in the paper. Seems like the government has been keeping the whole thing rather quiet. Discuss.

| Quote (SimTheDog) The White House already rejected SOPA the day before yesterday. And I am soooo happy about that! Even though I from Europe, it will obviously also affect us! They should realise that they probably won't really get their goal, since, like you said Ace, they'll be most likely taking down most of the good sites! Let's just hope that they'll reject PIPA too

| Basically, they've left SOPA 'on the shelf', so basically, SOPA can come back if America are worried about copyright and so forth.
